Deuba faction pushes for May general convention

KATHMANDU: The faction led by former president Sher Bahadur Deuba is preparing to move ahead with the party’s scheduled 15th general convention in May.

The plan is being discussed at an extended meeting that began in Kathmandu on Tuesday, bringing together central committee members elected from the 14th general convention, district presidents, and available regional presidents from the Valley.

Leaders from the Deuba camp are working on a roadmap to ensure that the previously scheduled general convention in May proceeds as planned, positioning it as a platform for party unity.

Nepali Congress leader Min Bishwokarma said discussions would focus on turning the upcoming general convention into a “unity convention,” given that its timeline has already approached ahead of any special session.

However, the central working committee led by party president Gagan Kumar Thapa has already decided to hold the 15th general convention in October.

Bishwokarma noted that following recognition of the Thapa-led leadership by the Election Commission and the court, efforts would be made to mobilize leaders who did not participate in the special convention and bring all sides together under a unified process.

He added that the meeting is expected to take necessary decisions to ensure that the 15th general convention becomes a unifying event for the party.

Despite ongoing internal discussions aimed at reconciliation, Bishwokarma said dialogue has yet to formally begin from the Thapa faction.

He stressed that the current priority is to bridge differences between supporters of both the special and regular conventions and move forward collectively toward the 15th general convention.

The extended meeting will also review the party’s recent electoral performance and analyze the causes behind its defeat. According to Bishwokarma, the meeting may continue for up to three days.
