KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress President Gagan Kumar Thapa has stated that previous Madhesh movements reflected dissatisfaction with the party.
Thapa, who is also the candidate for Sarlahi-4, said that while the Congress should have addressed many issues of the Tarai-Madhesh region, the party’s failure to do so led to the repeated emergence of new parties and movements.
He added that the Nepali Congress is now conducting self-assessment and striving to address Madhes-centric issues. Thapa expressed concern that recent tendencies to perceive the party as weak have worsened internal problems.
Acknowledging that unnecessary alliances with other parties have weakened Congress, he said that although the party has formed coalitions at various times, leaving Madhesh-focused issues to Madhesh-centered parties has undermined the Nepali Congress.
Thapa highlighted that the Nepali Congress must now reform itself and focus on Madhesh-related issues to regain credibility in the region.
