Bhotekoshi flood: 359 bodies recovered, 796 rescued by helicopter



KATHMANDU: The bodies of 359 people who died in Wednesday morning’s devastating flood in the Bhote Koshi River in Rasuwa have been recovered, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA).

The authority said 33 bodies were recovered in Dhading and 28 in Nuwakot.

Similarly, 17 bodies were recovered in Rasuwa, 30 in Gorkha, 82 in Nawalparasi East, 15 in Nawalparasi West, 22 in Tanahun and 132 in Chitwan.

According to NDRRMA, 796 people have so far been rescued from flood-affected areas by helicopters.

A total of 69 helicopter flights were carried out for rescue operations on Thursday alone. So far, 50 foreign nationals have also been rescued by helicopter, while 756 people have been rescued through ground operations.

The authority said the government has decided to provide Rs 10 million each to Rasuwa and Nuwakot and Rs 5 million to Dhading for relief efforts.

Ten truckloads of relief materials, including noodles, biscuits, sleeping bags, mattresses and blankets, have been sent to the affected areas. Communication equipment has also been dispatched, while four helicopter flights have delivered food and other essential supplies.

NDRRMA said 910 people remain out of contact. They include 28 Nepal Police personnel, 44 Nepali Army personnel, 13 Armed Police Force personnel, 15 Customs Office employees, four Immigration Office employees, 161 people from Rasuwa and one person from Nuwakot.

The list also includes 517 foreign nationals and 127 Nepali citizens residing abroad who had been visiting Nepal.
