KATHMANDU: Helambu in Sindhupalchok is steadily emerging as a popular destination for both domestic and international tourists, driven by the construction of the Helambu Himalayan Great Trail and its rich natural and cultural heritage.
The newly promoted destination of Chhyadi Ghyang, located within Helambu Rural Municipality, has added to the area’s appeal. Accessible from Kathmandu via Melamchi, the site has become an attractive option for trekking enthusiasts seeking scenic Himalayan experiences.
Around seven kilometres of the Helambu Himalayan Great Trail have been completed so far. The route passes through dense forests, the rich biodiversity of Langtang National Park, vibrant rhododendron forests, and a variety of alpine flowers. Snow-capped mountain views, lush greenery, fresh Himalayan air, and Buddhist stupas along the trail offer visitors a unique blend of nature and culture.
Although weather conditions around the Sagbari area can pose challenges, trekkers can reach Tharepati after approximately nine hours of hiking. The area offers well-equipped accommodation facilities and also serves as a gateway to the renowned Gosaikunda pilgrimage route.
From Tharepati, Chhyadi Ghyang can be reached after an additional two-hour trek.
To promote the destination, Helambu Rural Municipality held an executive meeting on Jestha 24, 2083 BS, at the foothills of Chhyadi Ghyang, located at an altitude of around 4,200 metres above sea level.
According to Rural Municipality Chair Nimagyalzen Sherpa, the meeting focused on promoting domestic tourism, mitigating the impacts of climate change, conserving glaciers and fragile Himalayan ecosystems, and advancing sustainable development initiatives in the region.
