Shankar Pokharel terms BBC documentary released ahead of polls as ‘proof of geopolitical maneuvering’

KATHMANDU: CPN-UML General Secretary Shankar Pokharel has described the BBC documentary made public on the eve of elections as living proof of geopolitical maneuvering.

Pokharel said the content was not merely a media production but an example of external geopolitical interference in Nepal’s internal politics.

According to him, the timing of the documentary’s release, just ahead of a sensitive electoral process, raises serious concerns about planned intervention in the domestic political affairs of a sovereign nation like Nepal.

He argued that while freedom of information is indispensable in a democracy, the timing and intent behind the dissemination of such materials must be transparent.

Analyzing the development as a deliberate intervention, Pokharel stressed that Nepal’s internal political process, particularly during elections, should remain free from external influence.

“Safeguarding democracy is the responsibility of the Nepali people themselves. External influence in this matter is unacceptable,” Pokharel wrote on Facebook. “Protecting Nepal’s sovereignty is our shared responsibility.”
