Birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad being observed today

KATHMANDU: The 1,501st birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad, regarded by Muslims as the last prophet of Islam, is being celebrated today with various programs.

Prophet Muhammad was born in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, and later migrated to Medina. The Islamic calendar, known as the Hijri calendar, began 53 years after his birth. The Hijri year 1448 is currently underway.

Mecca and Medina are considered sacred places by Muslims and are among the most important pilgrimage sites in Islam. According to Islamic belief, the Quran was revealed to Prophet Muhammad while he was preaching in the region.

Following the spread of Islam, Mecca and Medina became central pilgrimage destinations for Muslims. Muslims who are able to do so seek to visit Mecca at least once in their lifetime to perform Hajj.

Prophet Muhammad’s teachings and contributions to Islam are remembered on this occasion. Rallies, gatherings, religious programs and other events are being organized to mark his birth anniversary. Special programs have been organized at the Nepali Jame Masjid, Kashmiri Jame Masjid and other mosques and Islamic institutions.
