Lumbini Nepali Congress ministers resign as coalition shift looms

BUTWAL: Nepali Congress (NC) ministers in the Lumbini Provincial Government have collectively submitted their resignations to the party’s parliamentary party.

All five Congress ministers serving in the provincial cabinet submitted their resignation letters to Nepali Congress Parliamentary Party leader Dilli Bahadur Chaudhary. Social Development Minister Janmajaya Timilsena confirmed that the ministers had sent their resignations to Chaudhary.

The resignations came a day after the CPN-UML and the Nepali Communist Party (NCP) reached an agreement to cooperate in forming and running provincial governments.

The Nepali Congress ministers in the Lumbini government included Urban Development and Drinking Water Minister Saroj Thapa, Economic Affairs Minister Dhanendra Karki, Industry, Tourism and Transport Minister Prachanda Bikram Neupane, Social Development Minister Janmajaya Timilsena, and Forest and Environment Minister Devkaran Kalwar.

Following the resignations, the Nepali Congress parliamentary party is preparing to formally withdraw its support to the government by submitting a letter to Chief Minister Chet Narayan Acharya.

Chief Minister Acharya represents the CPN-UML. The Lumbini Provincial Government was previously formed through cooperation between the Nepali Congress and the UML. However, after the UML-NCP agreement, the Congress is set to move to the opposition.
