International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking observed today

KATHMANDU: The International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is being observed worldwide today to raise awareness about the devastating impact of drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking on individuals, families and communities.

The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed June 26 as the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking through a resolution adopted on December 7, 1987.

The annual observance underscores the global commitment to strengthening international cooperation and collective action to build a world free from drug abuse and illicit trafficking.

According to the United Nations, both drug use and the availability of illicit drugs have increased significantly worldwide in recent decades.

The production, trafficking and consumption of cocaine continue to rise, while the illegal trade in synthetic drugs—which are relatively inexpensive to produce and difficult for authorities to detect—is expanding rapidly.

The day also serves as an opportunity for governments, communities and organizations to promote prevention, treatment and rehabilitation efforts while reinforcing measures to combat the global drug trade.
