Removal of encroachments along Galchhi–Rasuwagadhi road begins

NUWAKOT: The Galchhi–Rasuwagadhi Road Project Office has begun removing encroached structures within the road’s right of way as part of an ongoing expansion project.

Demolition of structures started on Saturday for those who failed to comply with earlier notices requiring the clearance of buildings within 15 meters on both sides of the road.

According to Office Chief Krishnaraj Ojha, although compensation was offered in line with regulations and agreements were reached with many affected parties, structures belonging to those who did not comply are now being removed. These include 86 private houses and structures belonging to around a dozen government offices and organizations.

Ojha said the demolition drive in the district’s main market area began with the support of Bidur Municipality. The office aims to clear all encroachments within the district section within three days.

“The road expansion has been delayed due to structures obstructing the right of way,” Ojha said. “We plan to clear the area within a few days and instruct contractors to resume construction work.”

The road, which connects Galchhi in Dhading to the Rasuwagadhi border point with China via Bidur in Nuwakot, is a national pride project. Delays in clearing encroachments in market areas have stalled the project for nearly a decade.

In 2072 BS, the Council of Ministers decided to develop the route as part of a trilateral highway linking China, Nepal, and India. The government aims to develop it as one of the shortest international trade corridors.
