Adaptation Fund’s approval of three Nepali projects a milestone: Minister Chaudhary

KATHMANDU: Minister for Agriculture, Forest and Environment Geeta Chaudhary has described the approval of three Nepali projects by the Adaptation Fund as a milestone in addressing climate-induced disasters and strengthening the country’s climate adaptation capacity.

The 47th meeting of the Adaptation Fund Board endorsed three projects proposed by the Nepal government to strengthen the country’s resilience to climate change.

“At a time when demand for climate adaptation financing is rising and the Adaptation Fund is facing budgetary constraints, the approval of these three projects is a significant achievement,” Chaudhary said.

She said the funding would help Nepal address climate-related challenges, reduce environmental losses and strengthen adaptation efforts.

One of the approved projects, Green Koshi, aims to conserve ecosystems in the Koshi region through nature-based solutions while strengthening climate resilience. The National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC) will implement the project, for which USD 9.9 million has been proposed.

Chaudhary, who also chairs the NTNC, said Nepal was receiving support for climate-related initiatives from other sectors as well.

The second project, Strengthening Adaptation and Flood and Landslide Early Warning for the Hindu Kush Himalaya, aims to improve climate adaptation and strengthen early warning systems for floods and landslides. The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) will implement the project, which has proposed funding of USD 30 million.

The third project focuses on strengthening local-level leadership and promoting nature-based climate action in Lumbini Province to build climate-resilient communities. UN-Habitat will implement the project, for which USD 4.9 million has been proposed.
