KAVRE: The BP Highway has been blocked by landslides triggered by incessant rainfall. According to the District Police Office, landslides at Charsayabesi in Roshi Rural Municipality-7 and Gimdi in Roshi Rural Municipality-8 blocked the highway at around 4:30 am today.
Meanwhile, based on the rainfall forecast issued by the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, the Kavrepalanchok section of the BP Highway has been closed during nighttime since Thursday.
The District Administration Office said the highway may also be closed during the day depending on the flood and landslide situation. For now, vehicular movement has been prohibited from 5 pm to 5 am until Sunday night.
According to Chief District Officer Gopal Kumar Adhikari, a meeting of the district authorities decided to prohibit vehicular movement along the Kavrepalanchok section of the BP Highway from 5 pm to 5 am.
The District Police Office said authorities may impose daytime restrictions if an assessment of rainfall, floods and landslides indicates that travel is unsafe.
The meeting also decided to coordinate with police units in neighboring Sindhuli and Bhaktapur districts to facilitate implementation of the restrictions.
Authorities have also decided to alert residents living along riverbanks and in landslide-prone areas about the risks of possible floods and landslides. Information on potential risks will be disseminated regularly through local media.
Police have urged the public to assess the condition of the highway before travelling and, where possible, to travel only during the daytime.
