Bhange Waterfall draws growing crowds as monsoon boosts flow

KATHMANDU: Bhange Waterfall in Rasuwa’s Uttargaya Rural Municipality has become a popular monsoon destination, attracting hundreds of visitors each day as seasonal rains dramatically increase its water flow.

Situated along the Betrawati–Mailung–Syafrubesi highway, which connects Nepal with China, the 181-metre waterfall cascades down a steep cliff into a natural pool before joining the Trishuli River.

Its roadside location and easy accessibility have made it a favourite stop for travellers from Nuwakot, Kathmandu, Dhading and other districts.

Ward Chair of Uttargaya Rural Municipality-2, Tukuprasad Subedi, said the waterfall has witnessed a significant rise in visitors over the past few years after photos and videos of the site gained popularity on social media.

“On average, around 300 to 400 people visit the waterfall every day. On Fridays and Saturdays, the number can reach as high as 500,” he said, adding that hotels and homestays in the area are operating to accommodate tourists.

According to Subedi, the provincial and local governments have allocated Rs 4 million in the current fiscal year to improve infrastructure around the tourist site.

Visitors are often seen swimming in the natural pool formed at the base of the waterfall, while a nearby viewpoint offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.

The waterfall reaches its peak flow during the monsoon months of Asar, Shrawan and Bhadra. Water levels gradually decline after the rainy season, and in the dry winter months, the waterfall can shrink significantly or even dry up, making it a seasonal attraction.

Bhange Waterfall is located about 70 kilometres from Tokha in Kathmandu and around 18 kilometres from Bidur, the district headquarters of Nuwakot. Its scenic setting and convenient roadside access continue to make it one of the region’s emerging tourist attractions.
