Flash flood risk in three eastern districts as river levels expected to rise

KATHMANDU: The Flood Forecasting Division has issued a flash flood alert for parts of eastern Nepal, warning that rising water levels in rivers and streams could pose risks in Jhapa, Morang and Dhankuta districts on Thursday.

In its flood bulletin issued today, the Division said the flow of small rivers and streams passing through Jhapa, Morang and Dhankuta districts, as well as adjoining areas, is likely to rise significantly throughout the day.

“The flow of small rivers in Jhapa, Morang, Dhankuta and surrounding districts is expected to increase considerably, with a low risk of flash floods,” the bulletin stated.

Although the overall flood threat remains low, authorities have warned that sudden rises in water levels could pose risks to settlements located near riverbanks, low-lying areas, agricultural land and rural road networks.

Short-duration but intense rainfall, common during the monsoon season, can trigger localized flooding and inundation even when major rivers remain below danger levels.

The Division has advised residents living near rivers and streams, motorists travelling on riverbank roads, and communities in flood-prone areas to exercise caution.

People have also been urged to avoid unnecessary travel through flooded sections, monitor official weather and flood updates, and take precautionary measures to protect lives, livestock and property.

The advisory comes as monsoon activity continues to strengthen across eastern Nepal, increasing the likelihood of heavy rainfall in several districts over the coming days.
