Eviction drive begins in Gairigaun squatter settlement after Thapathali clearance

KATHMANDU: Authorities have launched an eviction drive in the squatter settlement at Gairigaun, Ward-9 of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, as part of an ongoing campaign to remove encroachments on public land.

A joint team of Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, and Kathmandu Metropolitan Police was deployed from this afternoon to demolish both temporary and permanent structures built illegally in the area.

According to Pawan Kumar Bhattarai, spokesperson for the District Police Range Kathmandu, the operation is currently underway with a significant security presence.

“The removal of illegally constructed structures has begun. After clearing the Thapathali settlement in the morning, the demolition drive is now being carried out in Gairigaun,” he said.

Police said that although security personnel have been kept on high alert to prevent any possible obstruction, no clashes or disruptions have been reported so far during the operation.
