Monsoon rains block nine highways, disrupt dozens of roads

KATHMANDU: Continuous monsoon rains have triggered landslides and road erosion across Nepal, leaving nine major highways completely blocked and disrupting traffic on several other road sections, according to Nepal Police.

Nine road sections have been completely blocked as of 6:00 am today. Authorities said the Khurkot–Nepalthok–Katunjebesi section of the BP Highway, which connects Kavrepalanchok and Sindhuli, has been closed to all types of vehicles from 6:00 pm to 4:00 am due to the risk of flooding.

Similarly, traffic on the Kanti Lokpath has been prohibited for all types of vehicles from 5:00 pm to 5:00 am throughout the monsoon season.

The Mechi Highway has been completely blocked after the road at Rajduwali in Ilam Municipality-9 became impassable due to mud. Landslides have also blocked the Araniko Highway at Jirokilo and Kodari in Bhotekoshi Rural Municipality, Sindhupalchowk.

Other roads that remain completely blocked due to landslides include the Kaligandaki Corridor at Belbagar in Jaimini Municipality-8, Baglung; the Ghorahi–Thawang Shahid Highway in Parivartan Rural Municipality, Rolpa; and the Nagma–Gamgadi road at Pina Khola in Chhayanath Rara Municipality-7, Mugu.

The Pasang Lhamu Highway in Gosainkunda Rural Municipality, Rasuwa, and the Mid-Hill Highway at Panikhola in Panchadebal Binayak Municipality-4, Achham, have also been completely blocked due to landslides. Similarly, the Besisahar–Chame–Manang road section at Myagde Bhir in Marsyangdi Rural Municipality-4, Lamjung, remains obstructed after landslides.

Meanwhile, Nepal Police said the Lamosangu–Ramechhap road at Kirnetar in Tamakoshi Rural Municipality-5, Dolakha, was blocked after the Tamakoshi River eroded part of the roadway. However, traffic has resumed through an alternative route via the premises of the Khimti Rural Electricity Cooperative.
