KATHMANDU: The Honorary Consular Corps Nepal (HCCN) has proposed expanding its role as a partner in Nepal’s economic diplomacy by mobilizing its international network to attract foreign investment, facilitate technology transfer, promote connectivity and expand tourism opportunities.
Speaking at the inaugural session of the 19th General Convention of HCCN, outgoing Dean Bhola Bikram Thapa said the organization aims to work as a multiplier for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) by leveraging its presence across 64 countries represented by its members.
An important initiative of the HCCN was the submission of a proposal, along with terms of reference, to the Department of Passports to support the implementation of an efficient queue management system and improve related public services.
“We have already begun work on this project following discussions with the concerned authorities. However, we are still awaiting approval,” he said. “I am confident that these well-prepared proposals will provide a strong foundation for future partnerships.”
Thapa reiterated the commitment to maintaining close cooperation with the government, particularly through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, while seeking to further deepen institutional collaboration.
He also highlighted the practical challenges faced by honorary consuls while carrying out their responsibilities in accordance with international conventions and established practices.
Thapa added that the HCC-N has engaged with senior officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including the Foreign Secretary and the Foreign Minister, to discuss issues of common concern to members.
“Although our proposals were well received, progress could not be achieved as anticipated,” Thapa said, adding that the interim government was focused on parliamentary elections while the newly elected government had to prioritize urgent national issues.
He expressed optimism that long-standing concerns would receive due consideration from the government and appropriate solutions would be found.
According to him, resolving these issues would strengthen the capacity of honorary consuls to perform their duties effectively while further enhancing cooperation between Nepal and the international community in areas of shared interest.
The event also marked a transition in the leadership of the HCCN, with the outgoing leadership congratulating the incoming chairperson/president and expressing confidence that the new team would guide the organization towards greater achievements. The outgoing leadership assured continued support and cooperation to the new HCCN team.
