KATHMANDU: The Central Committee meeting of the CPN-UML will now be held in Asar (June-July), nearly a month later, following preparations by party Chair KP Sharma Oli to convene the meeting at a later date.
The Secretariat meeting has entrusted Chair Oli and General Secretary Shankar Pokharel with the responsibility of holding consultations and finalizing the date for the Central Committee meeting.
According to party sources, although many leaders had argued that the meeting should be convened immediately, Oli was not in favor of doing so.
Some leaders have accused Oli of trying to avoid the Central Committee meeting out of fear that he could fall into a minority position there as well.
“Many leaders were in favor of holding the meeting by the mid-June, but the chair proposed organizing it between June 29 and July 4,” a UML Secretariat leader said. “Since no consensus was reached, it was decided that the chair and the general secretary would consult and finalize the meeting date.”
Meanwhile, second- and third-tier party leaders have been calling for an early Central Committee meeting to move the party toward transformation, generational shift, and reform.
