Over-speeding accounts for over 50 percent of road accidents



KATHMANDU: Over-speeding has been identified as a major contributing factor in road accidents recorded nationwide during the month of Baisakh (April–May 2026).

According to Nepal Police data, a total of 2,294 road accidents were recorded during the period, of which 1,253 were attributed to over-speeding—accounting for more than 50 percent of the total cases.

Similarly, driver negligence caused 137 accidents, followed by careless road crossing with 133 cases, drunk driving with 112 cases, and improper overtaking with 46 cases.

These accidents resulted in 239 fatalities, including 158 men, 54 women and 27 children. Likewise, 752 people sustained serious injuries, while 3,220 others suffered minor injuries.

During the same period, police recorded 137,094 traffic violations and collected fines amounting to Rs 118.02 million. A total of 3,334 vehicles were involved in the accidents, with two-wheelers accounting for the highest share.

Police data shows that most accidents occurred between 6:00 pm and 12:00 midnight. Meanwhile, in the past 24 hours, three people died and 94 were injured in separate road accidents across the country. All three fatalities were reported from Bagmati Province, police said.
