Squatter group threatens resistance against unilateral eviction drive



KATHMANDU: Residents of squatter settlements in Kathmandu have urged the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) to intervene and stop the government’s decision to evict them from encroached land.

A delegation led by the United National Squatters Front reached the party’s central office in Banasthali on Friday and submitted a memorandum calling for the immediate suspension of the eviction drive.

According to the group, the memorandum was handed over to RSP central member Khemraj Saud.

Speaking after the meeting, the front’s general secretary Arjun Kunwar said they were assured that actions violating human rights would not be carried out and that discussions with the government were ongoing.

He urged affected residents to remain united and expressed hope for a positive outcome.

However, the group warned of resistance if the government proceeds unilaterally with forced evictions.

The front has demanded that the eviction notice be immediately withdrawn, the National Land Problem Resolution Commission begin its verification and management process without delay, and that the rights to land and housing be ensured for the affected communities.
