Kathmandu ranks second among world’s most polluted cities with AQI 225

KATHMANDU: The air quality in Kathmandu has worsened, with the city ranking as the second most polluted in the world on Friday, according to data released by IQAir.

The Air Quality Index (AQI) in Kathmandu was recorded at 225, just behind Delhi, India, which topped the global list with an AQI of 244. An AQI level above 200 is classified as very unhealthy and poses serious health risks to the general population.

Health experts warn that prolonged exposure to high pollution can cause respiratory problems, worsen existing heart and lung conditions, and increase the risk of long-term health complications. Children, the elderly, and people with pre-existing health issues are particularly vulnerable.

Authorities have repeatedly urged residents to limit outdoor activities, wear protective masks, and follow official safety guidelines during periods of severe pollution. Concerns continue over the lack of long-term solutions to address Kathmandu’s worsening air quality.

Seasonal factors, including dry weather, dust, and rising vehicular emissions, are cited as key contributors to the spike in pollution levels in the capital.

Environmentalists stress the need for stricter enforcement of emission standards, better urban planning, and sustainable transport solutions to mitigate the crisis.
