PM Karki flags ‘moral burden’, Lamichhane backs Gen-Z report release

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Sushila Karki and Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) Chair Rabi Lamichhane held a meeting at Baluwatar on Sunday, discussing recent political developments following the elections.

During the meeting, Lamichhane thanked Prime Minister Karki for successfully conducting the elections. In response, Karki acknowledged RSP’s role in ensuring a smooth electoral process and expressed her gratitude.

The hour-long discussion also touched on the unexpected election results. Lamichhane admitted that while his party had anticipated becoming the largest force, it had not expected such a sweeping mandate. He told the Prime Minister that the public’s desire for change was clear, but the scale of support came as a surprise.

Prime Minister Karki said that although the message for change was visible before the elections, she had not expected such a sharp decline in the position of traditional parties. She also shared her recent consultations with constitutional experts.

Concern over Gen-Z movement

The meeting also included serious discussions on the Gen-Z movement held on September 8 and 9, 2025. Following the movement, a commission led by Gauribahadur Karki was formed to investigate the events.

Although the Cabinet has already moved ahead with implementing the commission’s report, the Prime Minister has not yet made it public. The report is currently being forwarded to relevant bodies for implementation.

Sources close to Lamichhane told Khabarhub that Prime Minister Karki expressed concern over growing public pressure to release the report. She reportedly said that if legal and constitutional constraints prevent her from making it public, she expects the incoming government to complete the process and release it.

Lamichhane assured her that the report would be made public after completing all legal procedures. He also stressed that there would be no disrespect toward the Gen-Z protesters or martyrs, and that those found guilty would be brought under the ambit of the law.

According to the Prime Minister’s Secretariat, Karki said she would feel morally burdened if the report is not made public. In response, Lamichhane reiterated his party’s commitment to transparency and justice.

Sources said Prime Minister Karki is also planning to hold discussions with incoming Prime Minister Balendra Shah regarding effective implementation of the report and ensuring accountability. While informal talks have already taken place, a formal meeting is expected soon.

Shah has publicly praised Karki’s leadership, particularly her role in steering the government during challenging times. Although there are indications that Karki intends to release the report herself after completing legal procedures, time constraints have created uncertainty.

Even if the report is not made public during her tenure, the incoming Balen-led government is expected to complete the legal process and ensure its publication, with Karki also playing a supportive role.

Positive remarks on Karki-led government

The meeting also included informal exchanges, during which Prime Minister Karki advised Lamichhane to address any allegations through proper legal procedures. She said that despite working tirelessly, she has faced criticism but has not engaged in any wrongdoing that would harm the state.

“I have worked day and night. I have not done anything that would harm the country or the government, yet I continue to face criticism. I am prepared to face it,” Karki told Lamichhane. She added that her main focus had been to ensure peaceful elections and hand over power to the new mandate.

Karki also said she would feel reassured only after the full implementation and publication of the commission’s report.

In response, Lamichhane expressed full confidence in the government’s decisions and said his party has no objections to the work carried out so far. He assured that the government would be allowed to function until its final day and pledged cooperation.

“I have always appreciated your courage and leadership. We have no objections to the decisions taken by this government. It should be allowed to function until its last day,” Lamichhane said, according to Baluwatar sources.

He also urged the Prime Minister not to resign immediately and to continue working until the final phase of the transition.

According to the Prime Minister’s Secretariat, Karki is not planning to resign before March 26. With the new Prime Minister expected to be appointed on March 27, she is likely to tender her resignation either on the evening of March 26 or the following morning.

Officials said the government still has several key tasks to complete, including finalizing pending work and addressing the commission’s report before stepping down.
