‘Bipin Joshi Chowk’ named in Kanchanpur to honor Nepali student killed in Israel-Hamas conflict

KANCHANPUR: Bhimdatta Municipality has named a major intersection ‘Bipin Joshi Chowk’ in memory of Bipin Joshi of Kanchanpur, who was taken hostage and later killed by the Palestinian militant group Hamas.

The intersection linking the East–West Highway and the Brahmadev Link Road, on the route leading to Joshi’s residence, has been officially named Bipin Joshi Chowk. The decision was taken by the municipal executive, following which the municipality and the concerned ward office formally unveiled a name board on Friday.

Ward Chair of Bhimdatt Municipality–3, Gagan Dhami, said a statue of Bipin Joshi will also be constructed at the same site. According to him, the municipality has already allocated a budget of Rs 200,000 for the statue.

Earlier, Bhimdatt Mayor Padam Bogati had publicly committed to installing a statue in Joshi’s memory.

Members of Joshi’s family, including his father Mahananda Joshi and elder brother Kishor Joshi, were present during the announcement ceremony of Bipin Joshi Chowk.

Ward Chair Dhami also said that the municipal executive has recommended to the federal government, through the District Administration Office, that Bipin Joshi be declared a martyr.

Bipin was among 49 students of the Faculty of Agriculture at Sudurpaschim University who had travelled to Israel under the ‘Learn and Earn’ programme two years ago. Within a month of their arrival, they were caught in a Hamas attack.

Ten Nepali students were killed in the attack, while Bipin was taken hostage. It is reported he died while in captivity.

In October 2025, during the process of ending the Israel-Hamas conflict, Hamas handed over Bipin’s body following an agreement reached under the first phase of a Middle East peace plan proposed by the United States, which included the release of hostages and Palestinian prisoners.
