Shashank Koirala urges party unity, calls for inclusion of dissenting voices

KASKI: Nepali Congress leader Shashank Koirala has stressed the need to bring together all dissenting factions within the party, saying unity is essential for strengthening the organization.

Addressing a Gandaki Province-level assembly and discussion program on party unity and future direction held in Pokhara on Saturday, Koirala said, “If the party is strong, we survive; if the party weakens, we all become weaker.”

He further said, “I do not seek any position. The party must be united. The party president should work to unify the organization through vision, duty and conduct.”

Referring to BP Koirala’s political example of proposing Suvarna Shumsher as Prime Minister instead of himself, Koirala remarked that Gagan Kumar Thapa had moved too quickly in becoming party president through a special general convention.

Former Central Committee member Kiran Poudel said there is a growing need for unity within the party and argued that the Congress was in favor of a regular general convention, calling the sudden special convention inappropriate.

Similarly, former minister and ex-Central Committee member Saraswati Aryal said that sidelining visionary leaders within the party would not be appropriate, and urged all leaders to be included in the party’s decision-making process.
