Mahottari issues 209 citizenship on mothers’ lineage in four months

JALESHWOR: Over the past four months, the District Administration Office, Mahottari, issued 209 citizenship certificates based on mothers’ lineage.

A Cabinet meeting held on December 26, 2025 had decided to grant citizenship to children whose fathers’ identities remain unknown. The decision was published in the Nepal Gazette on January 5, 2026, and circulars were subsequently sent to all DAOs across the country directing them to implement the provision.

According to Chief District Officer Indra Dev Yadav, such children reaching the eligible age of acquiring citizenship are getting citizenship by descent after completing the required processes. He said that a total of 209 people received citizenship certificates from January 20 to May 23 under this provision in the district. (RSS)
