EC warns teachers, professors against engaging in election campaigning

KATHMANDU: The Election Commission has warned professors, teachers and staff affiliated with educational institutions not to engage in election campaigning in view of the upcoming House of Representatives by-election scheduled for March 5 (Falgun 21).

Issuing a statement on Monday, the Commission said it had received complaints that some teachers and staff members were involved in campaigning in favor of political parties or candidates.

As per the Education Act, 1971 (2028 BS) and the Election Code of Conduct, 2026 (2082 BS), teachers and employees are prohibited from canvassing for or against any political party or candidate, or from using their official position and resources for election purposes.

Joint Secretary and spokesperson for the Commission, Narayan Prasad Bhattarai, said that legal action would be taken in accordance with Section 48 of the Code of Conduct if anyone is found violating the provisions.

The Commission further stated that monitoring committees at the district level, election officers and concerned offices will intensify surveillance to ensure compliance.

Urging all stakeholders to strictly follow the Code of Conduct, the Commission emphasized the need to maintain a free, fair, impartial, transparent and fear-free electoral environment.
