KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Balendra Shah and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim held a telephone conversation on Tuesday morning, discussing issues related to Nepali workers in Malaysia.
During the conversation, Shah emphasized the need to make foreign employment between Nepal and Malaysia dignified, transparent and free from exploitation.
According to Deepa Dahal, press and research expert to the Prime Minister, Shah told Ibrahim that the Nepal government was opposed to the syndicate and middleman system in Malaysia’s foreign employment sector, saying such practices had harmed Nepali workers.
“We do not like the syndicate and middleman system, and it is unacceptable under any circumstances. It has harmed the workers,” Shah told Ibrahim. “Therefore, I urge the labour ministers of both countries to engage in direct talks and take necessary steps to eliminate this problem once and for all.”
Ibrahim responded positively to Shah’s concerns and said he was also opposed to syndicates and exploitative practices in the foreign employment sector.
“I am also completely against such wrong and exploitative practices. I will immediately instruct our labour minister to discuss this issue with his Nepalese counterpart and find a concrete solution,” Ibrahim said.
The Malaysian prime minister also expressed his commitment to instructing his labour minister to coordinate immediately with the Nepalese labour minister and take necessary steps to address the issue.
