KATHMANDU: Speculation has intensified over who will become the next Home Minister following the resignation of Sudan Gurung, with Prime Minister Balen Shah yet to finalize a replacement.
For now, Prime Minister Shah has kept the Home Ministry under his direct charge. However, uncertainty remains over whether the next appointment will come from his close circle or from within the camp of Rabi Lamichhane, chair of the Rastriya Swatantra Party.
Gurung, who was earlier handpicked by Shah, resigned after controversies surrounding his alleged share dealings with businessman Deepak Bhatt surfaced.
Multiple names in discussion
Following Gurung’s exit, at least three to four new names have emerged in discussions for the post.
From the Prime Minister’s side, lawmaker Rajunath Pandey, a former Kathmandu Metropolitan Police chief who won elections after resigning from his post, has been floated as a strong contender.
Former Additional Inspector General of Police Bishwaraj Pokharel is also being considered. He is widely regarded as a disciplined figure and is seen as trusted by both Shah and Lamichhane.
From Lamichhane’s side, party leader Deepak Bohara has emerged as another candidate. Bohara is considered a close confidant of Lamichhane and has longstanding ties with him from his journalism days.
Sources suggest that while Shah is inclined toward Pandey or Pokharel, Lamichhane may push for Bohara, raising the possibility of internal negotiations.
Consensus candidate likely
“Three names are currently under discussion—Bishwaraj, Rajunath, and Deepak. One of them is likely to be appointed Home Minister,” a source said. “The Prime Minister appears inclined toward Rajunath, but consensus will be crucial.”
Decision expected soon
Party leaders have said the responsibility to select the next Home Minister has been left to Prime Minister Shah and party chair Lamichhane.
Although a final decision has not yet been reached, sources at Baluwatar indicate that a new Home Minister could be appointed within the next few days.
Meanwhile, the Shah-led cabinet has already seen two ministerial exits within 26 days of its formation. Earlier, Minister Deepak Sah was removed over allegations of securing a job for his spouse, and Gurung’s resignation on Wednesday marks the second departure in a short span.
