NC attributes 21-seat defeat to party discord

KATHMANDU: The Nepali Congress (NC) has concluded that internal infighting played a major role in its defeat in at least 21 constituencies in the recently concluded (March 5) House of Representatives elections.

Spokesperson Devraj Chalise, speaking after a review at the ongoing central committee meeting, said that in constituencies where the party lost by margins of fewer than 3,000 to 5,000 votes, internal differences were the primary reason.

“In constituencies where the party lost by 3,000 to 5,000 votes, internal disagreements combined with weaknesses in the election campaign contributed to the defeat. In seats lost by margins of 5,000 to 10,000 votes, internal rifts, weak campaign strategies, and adverse narratives put the party on the defensive,” Chalise explained.

He added, “We are conducting an in-depth discussion on how our traditional vote base shifted in this election. We are examining carefully whether it reflects mere vote migration or a deeper change in voter mindset. Our conclusion is that defeats by margins of 3,000 to 5,000 votes in around 20–21 constituencies were largely due to internal reasons.”

Chalise noted that organizational weaknesses in some areas and declining voter trust in the party also contributed to the poor performance. “The fact that the Congress, which has over 850,000 active members, failed to secure the expected votes is a serious concern,” he said.

Regarding defeats by larger margins, he said, “Losses by 3,000 to 5,000 votes may be linked to errors in the election campaign itself, which we are reviewing. In constituencies where the margin was 5,000 to 10,000 votes, disruptions, campaign problems, and certain adverse narratives compounded the party’s challenges. In addition to organizational weaknesses, voter confidence in the party was also affected.”

Chalise added that the ongoing central committee meeting is focusing on two main issues: the election review and the resignation of the party president.

“The meeting will determine a course of action to strengthen the Nepali Congress and reconnect with the people,” he concluded.
