EC recommends three-day public holiday during polls

KATHMANDU: The Election Commission Nepal has recommended that the government declare a three-day public holiday on March 4, 5 and 6  for the upcoming House of Representatives election.

According to Commission Spokesperson and Joint Secretary Narayan Prasad Bhattarai, the Government of Nepal has been advised to grant a public holiday on the day before voting, the voting day, and the following day in order to encourage greater voter participation.

March 2 (Monday) has already been designated a public holiday in the hill districts, and March 3 (Tuesday) in the Tarai districts, on the occasion of Fagu Purnima (Holi).

The Commission believes that a three-day public holiday will make it easier for voters who are away from their registered voting locations due to work or business to travel to their respective polling centres and cast their votes.
