Manichud Daha: A serene escape inside Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park

KATHMANDU: Nestled deep within the dense forests of Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park, which stretches across the northern hills of the Kathmandu Valley, lies the serene and mystical ‘Manichud Daha’ (lake).

Renowned for its natural beauty and religious significance, this tranquil lake offers a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. Far removed from Kathmandu’s urban noise, ‘Manichud Daha’ provides visitors with a calm and spiritually uplifting environment.

It has become an ideal destination for nature lovers seeking solitude away from the city. In recent years, the number of domestic tourists visiting the site has steadily increased.

Located at an altitude of approximately 2,400 meters above sea level, reaching the lake requires a three-hour uphill trek from the Jorpati-Sankhu area, Gagalpedi, or Sundarijal. The journey itself is rewarding, as trekkers pass through dense forests filled with cool mountain air and the soothing sounds of chirping birds. The area is also popular for peaceful hiking and birdwatching.

According to local legend, King Manichud of Saket was known for his deep religious devotion and generosity. It is believed that he was born with a divine gem embedded in his head.

Folklore says that during a time of severe famine and epidemic, the gem was needed to save the people. In an act of supreme sacrifice, the king is said to have beheaded himself at this very site and donated the precious gem. In honor of his sacrifice and the spiritual aura associated with the gem, the place came to be known as “Manichud Daha.”

Another intriguing local belief holds that birds in the area pick up fallen leaves from the lake’s surface, keeping its waters clean.

Surrounded by lush greenery, with its waters often blanketed in a thin veil of mist, the lake exudes a profound sense of spiritual peace. The number of devotees increases significantly during the holy month of August, when visitors come for worship and meditation.

Today, ‘Manichud Daha’ stands as a unique destination for those seeking a close connection with nature and a spiritually enriching experience through a short yet refreshing trek.
