HoR polls: Voter education campaign underway in 6,743 wards

KATHMANDU: With 11 days remaining before the House of Representatives (HoR) election, the Election Commission (EC) has intensified its nationwide voter education campaign to increase participation and reduce invalid votes.

According to the Commission, the program aims to raise public awareness about the significance of voting rights and proper voting procedures. One voter education volunteer has been deployed in each of the 6,743 wards across 753 local levels.

The Commission stated that volunteers are visiting communities and households, using sample ballot papers to explain the voting process and highlight the importance of casting valid ballots. Previously appointed local-level contact persons have been designated as monitors of the voter education program, and their orientation has already been completed.

In addition, the Commission said it is closely monitoring the spread of false and misleading information, as well as hate speech that violates the election code of conduct. The Information Ethics Promotion Unit, operating under the Election Information Dissemination and Coordination Center, has been made fully functional to address such issues.

So far, 290 individuals involved in producing or disseminating harmful content have been referred to the Cyber Bureau of Nepal Police for action under the Electronic Transactions Act, 2063. Likewise, 11 cases have been forwarded to the Nepal Telecommunications Authority under the Telecommunications Act, 2052; 65 cases to the Press Council Nepal under the Press Council Act, 2048; and one case under the Advertisement (Regulation) Act, 2076, the Commission said.
