Woman attempts self-immolation after dispute with husband in Kathmandu



KATHMANDU: A woman attempted to set herself on fire following a dispute with her husband near Bouddha Gate in Kathmandu on Monday afternoon.

The woman, identified as 27-year-old Salu Gurung from Temal Rural Municipality–3 of Kavrepalanchok and currently residing in Mulpani, Gokarneshwor Municipality–8, poured petrol over herself and attempted self-immolation at around 2:50 PM.

According to the Kathmandu District Police Range, the incident occurred in the parking area behind a snack shop jointly operated by the couple. Police said her husband immediately extinguished the fire and rushed her to Sushma Koirala Memorial Hospital in Sankhu for treatment.

Police said Gurung sustained burn injuries to around 50 percent of her body, including her face, chest and both hands. After receiving initial treatment at the Sankhu-based hospital, she was referred to Kirtipur Hospital for further medical care.

Kathmandu Police Range spokesperson Superintendent of Police (SP) Pawan Kumar Bhattarai said the woman is currently in a stable condition and able to speak.

Police have started further investigation to determine the exact cause of the incident and other related details.
