UML to build central office in Balkhu, return Kalanki land to Min Bahadur Gurung

KATHMANDU: The CPN-UML party has decided to construct its central office at its original site in Madannagar, Balkhu.

According to a proposal presented by party chair K. P. Sharma Oli during a Secretariat meeting in Gundu on Monday, the new central office building will be built on the party’s own land in Balkhu.

The UML headquarters had been displaced after the 2015 earthquake destroyed its original building, and the party has since operated from different locations. Recently, it had agreed to operate temporarily from the renovated Tulsi Lal Memorial Building.

However, after a fire incident on September 9, 2025, the party said the building was restored following a request from the concerned institution.

The party also noted that delays in lease renewals for land under various institutions after the formation of the new government have made it necessary to develop a permanent office structure.

In addition, the UML concluded that construction at the Kalanki site, where the office foundation was previously laid, is not currently feasible due to legal and technical issues related to a Supreme Court ruling on land near riverbanks.

The party has decided to operate from a rented facility until the new building is completed.

It has also decided to return the land donated for the Kalanki office project to businessman Min Bahadur Gurung and his spouse, thanking them for their support.

The Kalanki land donation issue had previously sparked political controversy within the party.
