RSP Chair Rabi Lamichhane faces petition seeking suspension from MP post

KATHMANDU: A writ petition has been filed at the Supreme Court on Tuesday demanding the suspension of Rabi Lamichhane from his position as a Member of Parliament.

According to Supreme Court spokesperson Arjun Prasad Koirala, the petition is currently under review, and a decision on whether to register or reject it will be made by Wednesday.

The writ was submitted to the Supreme Court administration on Monday by law student Ayush Badal.

The petition argues that Lamichhane should be barred from performing his duties as an MP until final verdicts are issued in ongoing cases related to cooperative fraud, organized crime, and money laundering.

It cites provisions under the Money Laundering Prevention Act, stating that individuals charged under the Act may be subject to automatic suspension until final adjudication.

Multiple cases against Lamichhane are currently under consideration in various courts, including the Kaski District Court for cooperative fraud and money laundering. Additional cases related to cooperative fraud and organized crime are also pending in Chitwan, Parsa, Rupandehi, and Kathmandu.

The Supreme Court administration will decide by Wednesday whether to register the petition or reject it. If the petition is refused registration, the petitioner may challenge the decision before a Supreme Court bench for a final ruling.
