WASHINGTON DC: US President Donald Trump has said Washington is considering winding down its military operations against Iran, while stressing that other countries should take responsibility for safeguarding the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
Trump, however, ruled out the possibility of a ceasefire, saying such a move is not appropriate when one side is gaining a decisive upper hand, BBC reported.
Amid concerns over global energy markets, the United States has announced a temporary easing of sanctions on Iranian oil shipments stranded at sea, aiming to stabilize prices.
Meanwhile, the United Kingdom has approved the use of its military bases for US strikes targeting Iranian-linked sites connected to Hormuz, a key route that handles nearly one-fifth of the world’s oil supply. Trump described the UK’s move as coming “very late,” highlighting differences among allies over the conflict.
In response, Iran’s foreign minister warned that British involvement could endanger lives, asserting that Tehran would exercise its right to self-defense.
Earlier, Trump had also criticized NATO allies for their reluctance to support US efforts in securing the crucial maritime corridor.
