Thapa–Khadka meeting signals breakthrough in Nepali Congress dispute

KATHMANDU: A consensus appears to be emerging in the internal dispute within the Nepali Congress following a meeting between party president Gagan Thapa and former acting president Purna Bahadur Khadka on Sunday evening.

The two leaders held discussions at Khadka’s residence in Golfutar, Kathmandu, after which an understanding was reportedly reached to ease tensions within the party.

According to sources, there has been an agreement to withdraw the clarification sought by the party’s disciplinary committee from Khadka. The committee had earlier asked him to explain statements he issued while serving as acting party president.

Sources said the leaders concluded that the clarification had lost its relevance after the Supreme Court recognized the leadership that emerged from the party’s special general convention.

The disciplinary committee had decided on April 15 to seek clarification from Khadka after he issued two statements in his capacity as acting president. The committee had provided a one-week deadline for the response.

Meanwhile, a meeting of the party’s disciplinary committee has been scheduled for 3 pm today to decide formally on withdrawing the clarification.

The development is being viewed as a sign that the ongoing dispute within the Nepali Congress may be heading toward resolution.
