POKHARA: Prime Minister Sushila Karki has stressed that education should not be limited to formal certificates, but should focus on practical skills, employability, entrepreneurship, innovation, and ethical human resources.
Addressing the 21st convocation of Pokhara University today, where she also served as Chancellor, PM Karki highlighted the need for universities to align academic programs with the demands of contemporary society.
She urged greater promotion of research-based scholarly activities and the development of new technologies, emphasizing that university curricula must directly contribute to strengthening the national economy. “Knowledge or coursework that cannot connect to economic prosperity and human welfare becomes irrelevant,” she said.
PM Karki also expressed concern over the outflow of young graduates abroad, stressing the need for both students and universities to focus on adapting to rapid global changes, remaining competitive, and developing necessary skills.
“Viewing change as an opportunity, embracing innovation and entrepreneurship has become a necessity,” she said. She praised Pokhara University for its long-standing contribution to expanding access to higher education in management, science, and related fields.
She further called for special efforts to produce a workforce capable of meeting global market demands. “The certificates our graduates receive should not only serve as a basis for employment, but also indicate the capacity to identify complex societal challenges and develop long-term solutions,” she said.
Highlighting the role of youth as future politicians, administrators, policymakers, and social change agents, PM Karki emphasized the importance of building a strong foundation today. She referred to the voices raised by Gen-Z on September 8 and 9, noting that their concerns were deep and fundamental.
She stressed the need for self-evaluation regarding past shortcomings and called for moving forward with responsibility, dedication, and integrity to achieve meaningful change.
PM Karki concluded by urging citizens to participate actively and responsibly in the upcoming elections, describing them as a critical opportunity to strengthen democracy, promote good governance, and build a corruption-free nation.
