KATHMANDU: The Central Zoo in Jawalakhel, operated under the National Trust for Nature Conservation, has been closed indefinitely after bird flu (avian influenza) was detected among animals within the zoo premises.
According to a notice issued by the zoo administration, the facility has been closed to the public effective from Friday, June 19, until further notice.
The administration said the decision was taken to protect public health and prevent the further spread of the infection following the detection of avian influenza among zoo animals.
Visitors and the general public have been requested not to visit the zoo during the closure period. The zoo administration also apologized for any inconvenience caused to visitors.
The Central Zoo, located in Jawalakhel, is one of the Kathmandu Valley’s most popular educational and tourist destinations, attracting thousands of visitors annually.
Authorities said necessary health and biosecurity measures are being implemented to contain the infection and assess the situation.
The zoo will reopen only after further technical evaluation and a review of the infection status, according to the administration.
