Changunarayan to become country’s first ‘Yoga Municipality’

BHAKTAPUR: The historic town of Changunarayan, located on a hill in the northeastern part of the Kathmandu Valley, is set to become Nepal’s first officially declared “Yoga Municipality.”

Speaking at a recent press conference, Jeevan Khatri, Mayor of Changunarayan Municipality, said preparations are underway to formally declare the municipality a “Yoga Municipality” during a three-day event scheduled for May 22–24.

According to Mayor Khatri, the event will feature a large-scale yoga science camp at the Nepal Electricity Authority Training Center in Kharipati every morning at 5:00 am.

On the final day of the programme, a special ceremony will be held during which the “Changu Yoga Jyoti Sandesh” souvenir will be unveiled, and the Chief Minister of Bagmati Province will officially declare Changunarayan a “Yoga Municipality.”

Following the declaration, yoga camps will be organized in every ward and school, while training programmes will also be launched for aspiring yoga instructors, the mayor said.

As part of the campaign, the municipality plans to integrate yoga into the school curriculum and make yoga education mandatory in all schools.

Mayor Khatri further said that yoga parks and meditation centers will be established across the municipality. The local government also plans to coordinate with Ayurveda and natural healing practices to promote yoga and expand its reach within the community.

During the press conference, Mohan Kumar Shrestha, Chief Administrative Officer of the municipality, said the campaign has generated strong enthusiasm among local residents.

Similarly, Nawaraj Kafle, a member of the provincial yoga committee, said there are plans to expand similar campaigns across the country in the future.
