Wildlife Week focuses on awareness and conservation

KANCHANPUR: Shuklaphanta National Park is observing Wildlife Week with a series of public awareness and conservation-focused programs.

The week, which began on April 14, is being held under the slogan “Safe People, Safe Wildlife: Utilization of Biodiversity, Bridge to Prosperity.”

Assistant Warden Binay Kumar Jha said the programs aim to reduce human–wildlife conflict, minimize damage, and promote prosperity through the sustainable use of biodiversity.

Activities include awareness programs on wildlife, environment and biodiversity, as well as cleanliness drives at the park’s main office in Majhgaun, with participation from local communities, students and stakeholders.

According to Ranger Prayas KC, the week will conclude on Monday (April 20) with additional cleanliness campaigns and conservation-related programs along the Mahendra Highway area in Arjuni, Eastern Sector.

He also said a swamp deer census will begin in the park during Wildlife Week, focusing on population size, habitat conditions and food availability.

In the previous census, the swamp deer population was recorded at 2,303. Conservation officials estimate the number may have increased due to strengthened protection efforts.

The park administration said notable progress has been achieved in wildlife conservation since the 1980s, crediting cooperation between government agencies, security forces, local communities and conservation partners.
