Leaders queue for NC tickets, but Gagan and Shekhar remain disconnected

KATHMANDU: As the Nepali Congress prepares for upcoming elections, tensions are rising over candidate selection, with no dialogue yet between party President Gagan Thapa and senior leader Dr. Shekhar Koirala.

According to Dr. Shekhar’s secretariat, a large number of leaders from across the country are requesting tickets for the House of Representatives. However, they claim that Thapa has not communicated with Koirala regarding the ticket allocation process.

“Leaders from across the country are queuing up for tickets,” the secretariat said. “But there is still no information on where, how, or based on what criteria tickets are being allocated.”

Shekhar’s personal secretary, Dinesh Chandra Thapaliya, confirmed that no dialogue has taken place with President Thapa so far, raising concerns about coordination within the party during the critical candidate selection phase.

President Thapa had stated on Monday that the names of candidates for direct election to the House of Representatives would be finalized on Tuesday.

In a video posted on Facebook Monday morning, he said, “We are in the final stage of candidate selection. Despite time and procedural constraints, we are making every effort to ensure an inclusive, balanced, and fair decision.”

He emphasized that the party is united in registering candidates, adding, “Instead of merely selecting candidates, we are seeking consensus and trying to include all sides. Tomorrow, everyone should work united in their constituencies in support of the party’s official candidates. This is not personal—it is a collective party campaign.”
