KATHMANDU: European Union (EU) Ambassador to Nepal Véronique Lorenzo paid a farewell call on Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday.
During the meeting, the two discussed various aspects of Nepal-EU relations, as well as matters of mutual interest and concern.
Lorenzo expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for its cooperation during her tenure, describing the ministry as supportive, active and responsive. She also expressed appreciation for the leadership and guidance provided by Foreign Minister Khanal.
Khanal thanked Lorenzo for her openness, sincerity and cooperation and appreciated the support she extended to Nepal and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
During the meeting, Lorenzo expressed the EU’s interest in collaborating with Nepal on issues related to mountains and water. Khanal said mountain-related issues remain a priority for the Nepali government and informed her that Nepal will host the second edition of the Sagarmatha Sambaad next year.
Lorenzo also said the EU was interested in cooperating with Nepal on safe, orderly and dignified migration. Welcoming the proposal, Khanal requested detailed information on the proposed areas of cooperation for further study and consideration.
He said safe and dignified migration is a key priority for Nepal and stressed that the government is committed to protecting Nepalis living abroad.
The two sides also exchanged views on the delayed process of Nepal’s graduation from the Least Developed Country (LDC) category. Lorenzo pledged EU support for the process and called on Nepal to submit a substantive action plan along with the necessary details.
The meeting also covered the promotion of Nepali art, culture and civilisation, as well as openness and freedom of expression.
Lorenzo sought the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ support for an exhibition showcasing Newari art. In response, Khanal reaffirmed the government’s commitment to promoting and preserving Nepal’s cultural heritage.
