KATHMANDU: Lawmakers have urged the government to promote electric cooking stoves as an alternative to liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and reduce the country’s dependence on imported cooking fuel.
Speaking at the House of Representatives (HoR) meeting on Tuesday, Shreeram Neupane stressed the need to encourage alternative energy sources to reduce environmental pollution and cut LPG imports. He also drew attention to the difficulties faced by citizens due to roads being disrupted by monsoon-induced floods and landslides.
Dhan Bahadur Budha said people in Dolpa were facing difficulties in transporting food and construction materials after landslides blocked roads. He called for immediate rescue, relief and rehabilitation for those affected by the disasters.
Prem Bahadur Bayak raised concerns over the increasing number of deaths from road accidents and urged the government to implement an effective road safety policy.
Lawmaker Prakash Pathak called on the government to take effective measures to control the growing problem of wild elephants in Jhapa, saying local residents were being increasingly affected by elephants entering settlements. He stressed the need for the government to ensure tangible results from its efforts.
Similarly, Purna Prasad Limbu of Sankhuwasabha informed the House that continuous rainfall had disrupted electricity supply in Bhokhola Rural Municipality, forcing residents to rely on alternative energy sources.
Meanwhile, opposition lawmakers ended their protest in the House on Tuesday after Speaker Dol Prasad Aryal on Monday directed Prime Minister Balendra Shah to respond to their concerns raised in the chamber.
