Tulsipur High Court’s Nepalgunj Bench clears 62.6% of cases in FY 2025/26

NEPALGUNJ: The Nepalgunj Bench of the Tulsipur High Court disposed of 1,354 out of 2,163 cases in the fiscal year 2025/26, achieving a case clearance rate of 62.6 percent, the court said.

Releasing its annual progress report on Friday, Judge Bamdev Gyawali said the court had successfully cleared all cases that were more than two years old.

The disposed cases included civil disputes such as property partition, maintenance, and divorce, as well as criminal cases involving drug offences, theft, robbery, rape, attempted murder, forgery, and banking crimes.

According to Judge Gyawali, only 15 cases older than 18 months remained pending as of the end of the fiscal year, with the court aiming to resolve them within the month of Shrawan.

Court records show that the total caseload comprised 642 pending cases carried over from the previous fiscal year and 1,521 newly registered cases, bringing the total to 2,163. Of these, 809 cases remain pending.

Under its annual work plan, the court had projected a caseload of 2,490 cases and set a target of disposing of 1,743 cases. Based on that target, it achieved 77.7 percent of its disposal goal.

Despite the progress, the court’s overall clearance rate declined compared to previous years. It stood at 71.41 percent in FY 2023/24 and 75.74 percent in FY 2024/25 before dropping to 62.6 percent in FY 2025/26.

Judge Gyawali attributed the decline to a four-month disruption in court hearings after the courthouse was set on fire during the Jeneji movement on Bhadra 23 and 24.

The court also reported completing the retrieval and authentication of 753 fire-damaged case files during the fiscal year.

Meanwhile, district courts in Banke and Bardiya disposed of 2,733 and 1,312 cases, respectively, during the fiscal year. The Banke District Court cleared 2,733 out of 7,047 cases, leaving 4,314 cases pending, for a disposal rate of approximately 38.8 percent.
