Harka Sampang defends placard protest inside Parliament, says PM must be accountable

KATHMANDU: Chairperson of the Shram Sanskriti Party Harka Sampang has said that his party was compelled to stage a protest with placards inside Parliament to ensure the Prime Minister is accountable to the House.

Speaking to journalists at the Parliament building in Singha Durbar on Monday, Sampang said the protest was organized because the Prime Minister had failed to respond to questions raised by lawmakers representing the public.

He argued that when elected representatives’ concerns are not addressed, it becomes necessary to remind the executive of its responsibility towards Parliament.

Sampang warned that if the government fails to establish proper governance practices, “irregularities will continue to grow in the coming days.”

Responding to questions on whether placard protests inside Parliament are appropriate, he said lawmakers do not need lessons on lawmaking from anyone.

He also suggested that laws should be drafted in the future allowing protests in Parliament in various forms.

Sampang further claimed that existing legal provisions require the Prime Minister to attend Parliament sessions, adding that the Prime Minister had violated that obligation by not appearing before the House.
