The day has been marked annually on April 18 since 1983 to promote the protection of World Heritage Sites recognized by UNESCO. In Nepal, listed sites include the Kathmandu Valley (Basantapur, Patan and Bhaktapur Durbar Squares, Changunarayan, Pashupatinath, Bouddha and Swayambhu), Lumbini, Chitwan National Park and Sagarmatha National Park.

An interaction programme focusing on the cultural significance of the Handigaun area is also scheduled after the walk. Bagmati Province Minister for Culture and Tourism, Suresh Shrestha, is expected to participate in the event.
