KATHMANDU: Nepal will be represented at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) by a delegation led by Prime Minister Balendra Shah, Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal said, with the team scheduled to travel to the United States next week.
Speaking at a meeting of the International Relations and Tourism Committee at Singha Durbar on Thursday, Khanal said that he would accompany the Prime Minister-led delegation to the General Assembly.
He said the United Nations General Assembly is scheduled to begin next week and that Nepal will be represented at the global forum under the leadership of the Prime Minister.
According to Khanal, Nepal is expected to raise issues concerning its national interests, international relations and contemporary global challenges during the General Assembly.
“The United Nations General Assembly is beginning next week, and a delegation led by the Honorable Prime Minister, including myself, will be leaving Nepal to participate in the General Assembly,” Khanal said.
The committee meeting also included discussions with experts on climate change and Nepal’s participation in the upcoming General Assembly.
Experts highlighted the risks Nepal faces from climate change and discussed issues including climate justice, international cooperation and climate finance. They also exchanged views on ways to effectively present Nepal’s climate-related concerns at international forums.
Khanal said Nepal’s participation in the General Assembly would provide an important platform to present the country’s foreign policy priorities and diplomatic positions on issues of national and international importance.
