Rain triggers landslides, disrupts traffic on several highways

KATHMANDU: Continuous rainfall has disrupted traffic on several highways across the country due to landslides, rockfalls, and mudslides.

According to Nepal Police, the Kanti Lokpath in Makawanpur has resumed two-way traffic after authorities cleared a landslide that had blocked the road since Wednesday evening. The landslide occurred at Ghattepakha in Bakaiya Rural Municipality-11.

Authorities have, however, imposed a nightly ban on all types of vehicles along the BP Highway section connecting Khurkot, Nepalthok, and Katunjebesi in Kavrepalanchok and Sindhuli from 6:00 pm to 4:00 am due to the risk of flooding during the monsoon.

Similarly, vehicular movement on the Kanti Lokpath has been restricted from 5:00 pm to 5:00 am as a precaution against monsoon-related hazards.

Meanwhile, the Mechi Highway at Rajduwali in Ilam Municipality-9 has been completely blocked by mud, and travelers have been advised to use alternative routes.

The Saljhandi–Dhorpatan road section at Panini Rural Municipality-2 in Arghakhanchi has also been completely obstructed by rockfalls.

Likewise, the Araniko Highway at Jiro Kilo in Bhotekoshi Rural Municipality-4 of Sindhupalchowk has been blocked by a landslide. Nepal Police said the Department of Roads and other concerned agencies are working to clear the debris and reopen the highway as soon as possible.
