Germany pledges €37.6 million in aid to Nepal for next two years

KATHMANDU: Germany has pledged €37.6 million in technical and financial assistance to Nepal for the next two years, reaffirming its commitment to strengthening bilateral development cooperation.

The announcement was made during the Nepal-Germany bilateral development cooperation talks concluded on Tuesday. According to the German Embassy in Kathmandu, both countries agreed to prioritize cooperation in the areas of energy, sustainable economic development, and health.

The Nepali delegation was led by Dhaniram Sharma, chief of the International Economic Assistance Coordination Division at the Ministry of Finance, while the German delegation was headed by Barbara Schäfer, head of the South Asia Division at Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

The pledged assistance will be utilized to support renewable energy and energy efficiency programs, strengthen electricity distribution systems, promote green and resilient agriculture, and advance reforms in the revenue sector.

The funding will also support quality infrastructure development, gender equality initiatives, sustainable economic growth, and efforts to expand access to financial services.

Germany has been one of Nepal’s longstanding development partners, supporting various sectors including energy, governance, health, and climate-resilient development.
