KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress President Gagan Kumar Thapa has said he is willing to work together by incorporating leaders who were left out of the party’s special general convention.
Speaking at an event organized on the occasion of the establishment day of “Society of Democratic Thinking,” Thapa said leaders excluded from the 14th general convention would be included in the central committee and other party structures.
“There is a large group of leaders elected from the 14th general convention who are not in my committee. I want to include them in the current central committee with due respect—those who should be senior leaders will be made senior leaders, and I want to work together by placing everyone in appropriate roles,” he said.
He also said preparations for the 15th general convention have already begun and noted that an election committee led by Prem Bahadur Khadka has been formed, adding that he is open to including additional members if needed.
Thapa further said the membership verification committee is being led by General Secretary Pradip Paudel and that additional members could also be added there. He also mentioned that the disciplinary committee is headed by Tara Man Gurung.
He emphasized that opportunities within the party should not depend on whether a leader came through the special convention or not.
“Who came from the special convention and who did not should not determine opportunities within the party,” he said.
Thapa also urged all active members across the country to update their party membership records.
During the programme, Congress leaders also expressed views on contemporary politics. General Secretary Pradip Paudel said the Prime Minister must be fully accountable to Parliament in a parliamentary system, expressing concern over the current government facing questions shortly after its formation.
Leader Arjun Narsingh KC suggested forming a constitutional reform commission led by a former Chief Justice to provide recommendations for constitutional amendments, involving both ruling and opposition parties.
The programme was chaired by Society President Kulchandra Wagle and included participation from constitutional experts, diplomats, former National Planning Commission officials, journalists and political leaders who shared views on the role of the Nepali Congress in current politics.
